Big Picture Systems Thinking, Jeremy Lent, Part 1 – Alan Hudson’s notes

Against ontological reductionism (e.g. Richard Dawkins), insisting on the importance of the relationships between things, but respecting also value of paying attention to component parts of things too
Prefers meta-crisis, rather than poly-crisis
The meta-problem is one of worldview
Patterning instinct is the way in which humans make sense of the world
Dualistic thinking- a worldview of separation, which leads to excessive individualism – has been the meta-problem
Fractal flourishing (of a holarchy) – moving beyond duality between individual well-being and social well-being.
The emergence of mutually beneficial symbiosis, is how transformative change happens.
Current system (global capitalism) is in a phase transition phase
Need to develop attractors – small islands of coherence, in a sea of chaos (Priogine) – so that transition moves in a good direction
And make bridges with other islands of coherence
